Michael Wayne Burns

Michael Wayne “Wootie” Burns was born on October 15, 1959, to the late Notice and Myrtle Burns.  Michael passed away at his residents on February 7, 2026.  He attended school in Atlanta, Texas. Although he did not attend church regularly, he accepted Christ at an early age.

Wayne worked at Lone Star for 10 years before beginning his career with the City of Atlanta, where he faithfully served for 32 years until his retirement in 2020.

Wayne was known for his outspoken personality, playful spirit, and contagious laughter. He was truly an all-around good man — the gentle giant of the family — loved dearly by everyone who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 30 years, Darlene Sherfield; his son, Tyrone Sherfield; his mother, Myrtle Burns; his father, Notice Burns; his brother, Otis Burns; and his sister, Ruby Burns.

A graveside service will be held Friday, February 20, 2026, at 2:30 PM at Garland Cemetery, 1317 CR 4328, DeKalb, Texas, with Minister Colby Boyce, Sr. officiating. Viewing will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, February 19, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

Wayne leaves to cherish his memories his children: Antonio Sherfield and Marjorie Sherfield of Atlanta, Texas; Shakeana (Kendrick) Davis of Marshall, Texas; and Mesheka White of Texarkana, Texas.

His grandchildren: Tiera (Wyatt), Jamodrick, Tacorian, Kenjayveon, Rihanna, Jamario, Amari, JerCobbie, JerLiyah, JerBraylon, Ta’tyana, and Mya, along with four great-grandchildren.

His sisters: Ruthie Reese of Sacramento, California; Kathie Sheppard of Dallas, Texas; and Mamie Seldon of Atlanta, Texas.

His brothers: Johnny Burns and Curlee Burns of Atlanta, Texas.

A special friend, Roy Lee Dickerson, and a host of extended family and friends also cherish his memory.
